How do you read a NAPA battery serial number? ›

All digits are numbers. The date code label is on a label located on either the top of the battery or the back side of the battery. The code on the top is 12 digits with the last 4 representing the month and year. In the example below 0220 means February 2020.

You may find the battery part number and battery serial number on the main battery label and/or small labels located on the side of battery pack. * On certain battery packs the battery part number is printed in small lettering.

If you're not sure when your battery was purchased, you can check the manufacturing date code, which is carved into the top of the unit itself. The letter indicates the month (A = January, B = February, etc.), and the number is the year (4 = 2004, 15 = 2015, etc.).

The “in service” date, that is, the date when the battery entered service; several manufacturers place a date sticker on top of the battery. Reading the Date Code

U.S. Battery uses a stamped code on the terminals of its flooded lead-acid batteries. The top left letter stamped on the terminal correlates to the month it was manufactured (A-L refers to January to December).

The first two characters indicate the month (e.g. 07 means July), the second two characters indicate the day (17 means the 17th), and the 5th number means the year, or the last number of the year the battery was manufactured in.

It is always five digits and consists of two parts: A three-digit number that indicates the capacity of the battery based on the number 500 (for 12V batteries). Eg 560 means batteries with a capacity of 60 Ampere, while 600 means batteries with a capacity of 100 Ampere.

Test the battery voltage

Place the red lead on the positive battery terminal (indicated by a red cover or a + symbol). Place the black lead on the negative terminal. Read the measurement. If the reading is below 12.4 volts, you may need to charge your battery.
